Summer of Dancing

Alex Luck | December 4, 2019

Dust off your dance shoes and step into summer with a bit of dancing. Whether you have two left feet or you’re going solo, there is no excuse to miss out on the fun. Dance like no one is watching and let the rhythm take over.

Nearly all dancing events and classes on the Gold Coast welcome all levels and most ages. You don’t need two to tango either; many places encourage participants to mix up partners – making it a great way to make new friends.

Swing into summer with one of the following dance classes, cha cha cha!

Free Dancing Events

Dancing on the Green, HOTA

On the first Sunday of every month from 9am you can find good vibes, fine tunes and a chance to dance on the HOTA lawn.

Dance Beneath the Stars, HOTA

HOTA does it again with a big dance party on Friday 13 December at 7pm. This free event includes live brass music from Hot Potato Band and tunes from award-winning songstress, Geraldine Quinn. If you want to dance the night away or get glammed up in some fun vintage wear, come along and dance under the stars.

Latin Dancing Under the Sails, Broadbeach

Next time you’re dining in Broadbeach, you can work off dessert and jump in on free Latin dancing held outside near the Oasis Shopping Centre. Due to popular demand, this event has been on the last Saturday of every month from 7-10pm for the past four years and is proudly hosted by Latinmania.

Salsa in the Park, Southport

If you’re not a night owl, soak in the sun at Broadwater Parklands with a bit of salsa on the last Sunday of every month. From 3 – 3.30pm you can join in on Latinmania’s free introductory dance lesson followed by free social dancing until 6pm. This event has been popular amongst all ages and levels for the past seven years.

Passada, Burleigh

No dance experience is needed for Kizomba, also known as passada, which means ‘to step’ in Portuguese. This fun school of Afro Latin dance welcomes all levels, so there is no need to feel shy. If you want to try it for free, your first class is complimentary and classes are on nearly every evening of the week.

Gold Coast Salsa Academy, Southport

No need to bring a dance partner if you want to learn how to salsa, just walk up to this fun studio off Ferry road. In fact, the Gold Coast Salsa Academy insists the fastest ways to learn how to dance is to dance with everyone. Why not hop in? Your first 60-minute class is free. You can learn Salsa, Bachata or the Brazilian Zouk, which is more open, flowing and often danced to R’n’B music.

5th Avenue Dance, Ashmore

Want to try the foxtrot, ballroom dancing or tango without all the formal routines and combinations? Try a free lesson with 5th Avenue Dance and discover your fun side with a new twist. Whether it is salsa, cha cha, meringue or samba, 5th Avenue Dance will teach you how to lead and follow so you can dance with anyone at any time.

If you’re interested in combining fitness with fancy footwork, there are more than six different types of dance classes to choose from all along the city.

Passada, Burleigh

The same school of Afro Latin Dance also hosts Dance Fit to help you get in shape with heaps of fun. You can be prepared to sweat as you bust out funky moves to the tunes of Afro house music. Passada welcomes all background and fitness levels with big open arms.

Zumba arrived on Australian shores 10 years ago and the party hasn’t stopped since. Fusing fitness, entertainment and culture into an exhilarating dance-party workout, Zumba is one of the most popular methods of melting off calories on the Gold Coast. From Tugan to Hope Island, you can find more than 30 places along the coast that offer certified Zumba classes.

Dance Skool, Nerang

This all-inclusive dance school is the first of its kind to offer hip hop dance classes for all levels and all ages. Choose from hip hop, free style, breakdance, house, kids Acro and Ragga fit (a fusion of hip-hop, dancehall and afro that can help you burn up to 600 calories). Dance Skool offers many ways to disguise exercise. Little ones under six are welcome too.

Lights Out and Dance, Runaway Bay and Burleigh

For only seven dollars, you can jump in on their weekly dance session with the lights out. Say hello to letting your hair down, closing your eyes and dancing to your heart’s content – all while burning calories. If you’re a free spirit, this event is right up your alley as there are no steps to memorise, no instructions and the only rule is no talking – just dancing. Walk up with a friend or embrace your independent side and come on your own.

That’s My Jam, Mermaid Beach

This strong and sassy dance program for women will have you swinging your hips to the tunes of Beyonce, Missy Elliot, Lizzo and much more. After training in ballet, hip hop and Jamaican dancehall, Kyla Blacksmith wanted to create something fit and fun to help foster body confidence and empowerment; That’s My Jam was born soon after. Classes fill up fast, so book your spot before you miss out on these fun fitness routines.

Dance Technique, Burleigh Heads

If you’re tired of the gym and you want to try something different such as jazz, tap, ballet, hip hop, or acrobatics, Dance Technique is your go-to studio. They offer a diverse range of dance disciplines under one roof and their classes are often held in the late afternoon and evenings making it easy to pop in after work for some fun.
