The best art galleries to explore on the Gold Coast

Art is alive and thriving on the Gold Coast.
Whether it’s contemporary or classic art you’re into, there’s plenty to discover right here on the Gold Coast. We have a range of local galleries that cater to all styles and tastes right here in our own backyard, with many boasting more than wall-to-wall artworks. Here’s a snapshot of some of the Gold Coast’s best art galleries.
19 Karen Contemporary Art Space, Mermaid Beach
Gold Coast’s largest contemporary art gallery, 19 Karen is a stylish refurbished warehouse in the heart of Mermaid Beach’s industrial precinct. The gallery exclusively showcases the work of almost 100 Australian and international emerging artists, spanning genres such as surrealism, pop art, abstract, urban and street art, and expressionism. An art collector’s mecca, the gallery also has a substantial stockroom as well as a dedicated area displaying the private collection of gallery director Terri Lew. Entry is free and dogs (as well as humans) are welcome. As it’s a busy area, parking can be a challenge, but Pacific Square just behind the gallery has two-hour parking.
Dust Temple, Currumbin
Dust Temple at Currumbin is more than an art gallery. It’s an everchanging creative space with a café and bar, that also hosts life drawing sessions, art workshops, poetry slams and live music. Bringing creativity to the community, Dust Temple also has art studios that house painters, sculptors and photographers, and has had a number of photoshoots, music videos and short films recorded on site. Dust Temple also hosts the SWELL smalls exhibition and the Dean Cogle portrait prize.
Art Lovers Australia, Southport
Run by artists for artists, Art Lovers Australia at the Brickworks Annex in Southport boasts an impressive collection of contemporary artworks, both in-house and online. What originally began as a digital hub, Art Lovers Australia has recently expanded into the physical space, providing a window for the online store as well as a location for regular events and creative workshops. A welcome addition to the Gold Coast arts scene, the gallery remains committed to supporting talented artists and offers a refreshing experience and affordable, authentic art for collectors.
Urban Paradise Gallery, Surfers Paradise
Displaying works from local talent ranging from high school students to award-winning artists, Urban Paradise Gallery in Surfers Paradise is an artist-run, not-for-profit gallery where all sales go directly to the creators. The gallery showcases a plethora of styles and works suited to all budgets and tastes. A creative refuge in the heart of the Glitter Strip, the gallery sits within the Chevron Renaissance Centre (opposite Infinity) and is open seven days a week.
HOTA Gallery, Surfers Paradise
Having opened in May 2021, the brand-new $60.5 million HOTA Gallery in Surfers Paradise will be Australia’s largest gallery outside a capital city. The purpose-built, six-level building will comprise more than 2000m2 of gallery space, including dedicated areas for national and international touring exhibitions, a children’s gallery and an exhibition space for the City collection. The building also boasts an impressive rooftop area with views of the iconic Surfers Paradise skyline. The anticipated HOTA Gallery is set to become a vibrant tourist destination and to heighten the cultural pulse of the Gold Coast.
The Walls Art Space, Miami
The Walls at Miami is a contemporary art space that bridges the cultural landscape between HOTA and the general public, supporting local talent and showcasing exhibitions from emerging and established artists. With a mission to connect people to current and experimental art on the Gold Coast, the gallery also hosts artists’ talks and helps contextualise all works through friendly explanations and accompanying essays, making the artworks more accessible to all. The Walls is a must-see for anyone interested in contemporary art, culture and a creative representation of life in the region.
The HIVE Art Gallery, Burleigh Heads
All abuzz in Burleigh, The HIVE inspires creativity, mindful focus and collaboration. Home to the exclusive Australian collection of internationally acclaimed Italian painters the Iguarnieri brothers, The HIVE also features works from local emerging and established artists. The gallery also hosts a range of events and workshops, including Studio Open Days, which are free for visiting artists to work in the space. Friday Buzz Nights are another sweet offering, when the HIVE comes alive after dark. On Buzz Nights, art lovers are invited to bring a friend and a record from their vinyl collection to hang out at the space, meet with HIVE artists and see their new works.
Gallery One, Southport
With a mission to become one of Australia’s premier art galleries, Gallery One at the Brickworks in Southport houses an impressive collection of investment-worthy contemporary fine art. Representing an array of multi-award-winning Australian artists, the gallery also hosts regular exhibition openings and events where art lovers can meet the artists and dive deeper into their works. If you are searching for that perfect piece to deck your own halls, Gallery One also offers an onsite consultancy service where they will bring a selection of your shortlisted works to your home or office to help you envision the artwork in your space.
Anthea Polson Art, Main Beach
With two Main Beach locations (Tedder Avenue and Marina Mirage), Anthea Polson Art showcases a wide range of contemporary Australian art and sculpture. Representing dozens of artists, the two locations are an everchanging display of colour, texture and considered curation. The gallery also boasts an impressive selection of stockroom artists. As well as nurturing creatives, the business also offers art consultancy and interior design assistance.
